The Japanese were first to bring back the practice of bathing and to elevate it to something more than a means to get clean. The first onsen, which is a bathing facility built around a natural hot spring was built in the 700’s and was the predecessor of the ofuro.
The Japanese ofuro which uses a tub deeper than a modern day standalone Western bathtub is exclusively used for relaxation and soaking, not for bathing. Ofuros rose in popularity as Inns that offered their use to weary travelers were built across Japan in the 9th and 10th centuries.
Bathing regularly and soaking in hot water came back into style around the 13th century.
Hot tubs as we think of them today became popular in the U.S during the 1940’s as soldiers who had experienced onsens and ofuros while fighting in the Pacific during World War II came home.
